Twitter talking to Facebook, Google

LEADING THE DAY: President Obama is set to announce his plan to bring wireless Internet to all parts of the country in a speech at Northern Michigan University. As The Washington Post reported, Obama will announce more than $18 billion in federal funds for the initiative. The money will go to improving infrastructure, helping first responders build a mobile Internet network and development of wireless technology for education, health care and energy. Twitter in low-level talks with Google, Facebook: Google and Facebook have reportedly been in talks with Twitter about acquiring the company, though those talks have "gone nowhere," the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday. Discussions with these companies have valued Twitter at $8 billion and $10 billion, the newspaper said.

Nokia, Microsoft talking about a partnership: Nokia and Microsoft are reported to be near finalizing a partnership to use the Microsoft mobile platform in Nokia phones. As Bloombergand the Wall Street Journal reported, Nokia was also in talks with Google to use the Android platform, but those talks seem to have fallen apart. Nokia and Microsoft are reportedly trying to wrap up talks in time for Nokia chief executive Steve Elop to announce the partnership to investors on Friday.

South Carolina prisoners pulled from Facebook: After a Charlotte Post and Courier report showed that several Carolina inmates had Facebook accounts, state representative Wendell Gilliard (D-Charleston) is sponsoring legislation that would make it illegal for inmates to join social networks such as MySpace and Facebook. Inmates were posting to the social networking sites by asking others to post information for them or smuggling cellphones into prison.

Verizon launches iPhone, completes first LTE call: The Verizon iPhone 4 went on sale this morning at 7 a.m. to waiting crowds, and the company continues to make progress on its LTE network. Verizon announced Wednesday that it had completed its first voice over LTE call.
