Google Wallet Likely Launching in 19 sep 2011

IMAG0037

ast week, Google posted an awesome teaser video for Google Wallet featuring George Costanza. The implication: Google Wallet would finally be launching soon. Now we think we know when: tomorrow.

As you can see in the above image, documentation is being sent around to partners stating a September 19 launch day. We’ve heard from others that this is accurate. And it also lines up nicely with NFC World Congress, which kicks off tomorrow in the French Riviera. Google is not listed as a speaker or exhibitor at the event, but their main partner MasterCard is the official sponsor.

Back in May when Google Wallet and Offers were initially unveiled, Google stated that field trials for Wallet would beging immediately and that an official launch would come this summer. Initial reports pointed towards a September 1 launch. Technically, summer lasts until September 22, so it looks like Google will hit their deadline with a few days to spare.

While this will be the official launch, the product itself will likely still be quite limited. The only officially compatible phone is the Nexus S 4G, which is only available on Sprint in the U.S. Google has an NFC sticker product to bring tap-and-pay to other phones, but it’s not clear if that will be ready at launch or not. Hardware to enable the payments on the merchant end is also needed. And again, MasterCard has been the only official partner on the credit card side of things so far. Perhaps Google will have more to say on that tomorrow. But the above documentation still points to PayPass-enabled Citi MasterCards as the only way to use the service for now.

It also makes sense for Google to get Wallet out there now before their next flagship Android phone, the Nexus Prime, launches next month. It too will have NFC capabilities built in and will bring the Wallet functionality to the much larger Verizon customer base.

Shared links have a short lifespan

Twitter, Facebook and other social media sites are a great way to share what you’re reading with other, often like-minded people. But as you hit “Tweet” or “Post,” have you ever wondered just how long your link of a cute kitten picture or deep-dive analysis into foreign policy is on your friends’ radars?

Link-shortening service bit.ly released an analysis on its blog of the anatomy of a shared link’s lifespan.

Items shared using bit.ly’s service tend to stay hot for about three hours regardless of what service you use. Links tend to follow the same traffic path as well — a quick spike in traffic after it’s posted and then a sharp drop-off. The company used a link’s half life, or how long it takes the link to get half the clicks it will ever receive, to measure staying power.

According to their analysis, an average half life for a link on Twitter is 2.8 hours and slightly longer — 3.2 hours — on Facebook. Sharing a link from YouTube gets you a few more hours of attention: the average half life there is 7.4 hours.

Ultimately, however, bit.ly has found that the content of a link means a lot more than where you share it, backing up the old idea that content is king after all.

For example, I recently launched a new website focused on providing a platform for SEO experts and those seeking search engine optimization services. I could have selected from a variety of keywords and ultimately settled on the plural form of a keyword phrase. Even thought there was only a single letter differentiating the two terms I was considering, the plural form SEO experts had just as many searches and much less competition. This is ideal for long term success on search result pages. There are many tools available to work with that can make the job of optimizing your site much easier. Digital Marketing - Twitter Vs Google

In the May 2009, many digital marketing professionals thought that Twitter would end Google's reign. However, a year later in 2010, Google ended such speculation by announcing that it had partnered with Twitter to include real-time tweets in its search results. Initially, it was believed that unless Twitter developed a system for cleaning up spam on its network, it could not possibly threaten Google. This was because the main USP of the Google is its ability to deliver relevant, high quality results for different search terms. Though these results were not completely spam-free, they were much better than the results provided by other search engines.

According to a Internet marketing article published in 2010 by Technology Review, Google equates a user following another user on a social networking website, to one web page adding a link to another on the Internet. Just as the value of a page increases when a highly-ranked page links to it, the quality of a user goes up if a more established user begins following him. Does this mean that getting more Twitter followers is the same as the common digital marketing strategy of collecting more incoming links?

No, not quite. Collecting followers on Twitter is one of the easiest things to spam. There are many tools out there that will follow users, based on specified digital marketing keywords. Most users, who are followed on Twitter, will usually return to the favour by following the follower. Once a digital marketing brand gets a ton of followers using such a tool, it is quite simple to unfollow a majority of these users with applications like ManageTwitter. Additionally, the brands could also get profile names which include a targeted digital marketing keyword, and also create other profiles having that same keyword.

The only way for Google to beat this is to modify their search engine algorithm to weed out profiles that do reciprocal social media following, similar to reciprocal link building. Another related issue is the importance of social search. Digital marketing pundits are always saying that people are more likely to trust the advice given by their friends, rather than Google's search results. Theoretically, this may be true, but in the actual practice, it is not so. In fact, most users begin to follow others simply because of a single smart tweet. They do not really know the person they are following or value their opinion.
